Technical instructional film for bomb aimers, focusing on dive bombing.
Reel 1: Principles of dive bombing – Angle of dive, optimum angle to hit target, “lag” explained, reduced angle of dive increases amount of lag. Allowance for lag explained and bombing angle shown to strike target. 50 to 70º is ideal angle of dive depending on aircraft. Factors involved in successful dive bombing include angle of dive, height of release, ballistics of bomb (weight, size and shape) and relative wind air speed at moment of release. Explanation of “The Nomogram”, a diagrammatic device for computing the bombing angle.
Reel 2: “Experiments to verify the Nomogram” - Demonstration of the use of the Nomogram to calculate bombing angle from angle of dive, release height, effect of trail, relative wind. “Sighting” - determining the sighting point of the dive relative to the sighting point in normal level flight.
Reel 3: “Applying The Bombing Angle” - setting a visual guide for the bomb release point by extending the known no wind sighting point on the aircraft gunsight (in the example of a Skua) by use of the 100mph circle of the gunsight. “The Effect Of Wind On Sighting” - effect of head wind on the forward speed of the A/C. Angular Aim Off point explained. “Effect Of Enemy Movement On Sighting” - “Angular Aim Off For Relative Wind” explained. Compensating for head or tail wind explained. 1/4º per knot of wind the usual amount. “The X Point” - dive bombing attack has 4 phases, Approach, Initial Dive, Aiming Dive, “Get Away” - the “X” point is the commencement point of the aiming dive.
