Instructional safety film about aircraft safety, using dramatic reconstruction to illustrate the points made.
Part 1. Notice about aircraft safety lecture and two pilots complaining about having to attend. Scene of pilots in lecture room. Wing Commander enters and starts discussing aircraft takeoffs and landings. Night scene of Lancaster starting up. Explanation of procedure for taxi out and preparation for take off. Communication by Aldis Lamp for various stages of taxiing and take off, and use of red/green signals. Back in lecture room. Explanation of night lights on airfields. Dramatic reconstruction of aircraft contacting flying control to be allocated a landing slot. Situations where radio transmissions and wireless transmitter are U/S is raised. Explanation of procedure by experienced pilot. Scene in aircraft pilot telling wireless operator put IFF to "Broad". Scene in flying control as aircraft is picked up showing "Broad" and priority given to aircraft and visual aids used to bring it back safely. Observer post alerted to damaged aircraft.
Part 2. Flying control room, observer post locating aircraft. Use of searchlights to assist aircraft return to base . Aircraft flying along searchlight beam and searchlight beams used to "fence off" barrage balloons that are likely to interfer with aircraft. Aircraft lands safely. Question fielded about unserviceable compass while over enemy territory . Procedure for escorting aircraft back safely by using a Mosquito fighter escort.
Part 3. Mosquito locates Lancaster and brings it back safely. Summary of lecture if radio/compass/instruments are U/S. Use IFF set to "Broad" to help. Procedure to deal with bad weather. Observer post uses flares to warn of high ground ahead. Red flares would used to warn of high ground. Aircraft returns to base safely. Lecture bullet points summarised with mnemonics – "Get lost and there is always "Darkie Service", for no RT/WT, Compass etc, "SANDRA" shows you something, SANDRA shows you the way, Don't meander, Fly by SANDRA" (Searchlight homing?), "Fighter guidance for lost aircraft".
