After leaving the Sous-Préfecture, General de Gaulle arrives at the central park in Bayeux where a large crowd has gathered to hear him speak; recognisable among his political and military associates present at the occasion are General Koenig, M Vienot, M Coulet, M Palewski, Colonel Chandon (?), Colonel de Chevigne (?), Admiral d'Argenlieu and General Bethouart. Maurice Schumann, a Free French radio-announcer and Gaullist master of ceremonies in Bayeux, introduces de Gaulle to small children on hand to present bouquets and to various adults in the crowd; Colonel Chandon (?) takes the flowers from de Gaulle, whose public manner is stiff and awkward. De Gaulle addresses the crowd, using incisive chopping arm movements to emphasise he is making in his speech. The cameraman scans the audience, including two self- consciously heroic-looking French youths. On completing his address, de Gaulle and his associates leave the park, pausing when the Marseillaise is played. The crowd gathers round his jeep before he sets off for Isigny in 1st US Army's sector of the Normandy beachhead.
