Life in Vitez and Travnik after the reaching of the cease-fire between Muslims and Croats.
Content description
Opening shots of Muslims at prayer. Panning shot of the city and its surrounding valley. Scrolling text explains that three months ago this area was criss-crossed with confrontation lines. On the 23rd of February General Rasim Delic, Bosnian Government Army, and Ante Roso, Croatian Army, signed a ceasefire. UNPROFOR is now stationed in between the two sides. Footage of signing of the ceasefire agreement. Shots of UN tank, empty trenches and the arrival of convoy trucks carrying wood. One old woman says that they have been very short of fuel and that this is only the second truck in a year that has arrived here.
There is now a daily bus service between Zenica and Stari Vitez. A BRITBAT soldier explains that by setting up UN checkpoints they can allow civilians to move more securely through the region. BRITBAT regularly patrol and are helping to restore elements of the public infrastructure, like utilities, with representatives of both the Croatian and Bosnian sides. Captain John Heap, Civil Affairs Liaison Officer, Vitez says that they have made arrangements with the Croatian and Bosnian authorities to clear mines around the pylons so that the pylons themselves can be rebuilt and electricity supplies restored to the area.
Shots of Vitez market place, now thronging with people. Well-stocked fruit and clothes stalls visible. Interview with Brigadier Filip Filipović of HVO who says that he is satisfied with the current peace and that politicians, too, must do their jobs and find a solution. Across the confrontation line at Travnik, General Alagić of the Bosnian Army 7th Corps says that the role of UNPROFOR is very important in this region. Interview with Lieutenant Colonel Peter Williams, BRITBAT, who says that vigilance remains a necessity. J.F. Carter, Civil Affairs Officer, Vitez says that the UN needs to drive forward political progress so that it does not stagnate, but he believes that the "collective wisdom" of many different people will bring about a solution.
