Object description
Part 1 of basic instructional film for airmen separates for general identification purposes Royal Navy ship types by size and function over stockshot views of vessels at sea.
Full description
Part 1 is subtitled "A brief survey of His Majesty's ships by Type only." Aerial reconnaissance duties of RAF cooperating with Royal Navy are listed over aerial view of Anson of Coastal Command: report position, disposition, composition, course and speed of seaborne enemy force. Ship Types are then very broadly defined over general film: battleship, heavy and light cruiser, destroyer (H 99 - HMS Hero), sloop, minesweeper, aircraft carrier (HMS Ark Royal), depot ship and submarine (14M - HMS Porpoise). Commentary combines levity with bombast, declaring that "today Britain looks to seapower to thrash an upstart with poor sea manners (Germany)" and recalling Nelson's dictum on the enemy.
