Compilation of training and ceremonial titled sequences shot between 1929 and 1938, and presumably intended for local recruitment purposes, shows the peacetime activity and equipment of the 5th Battalion The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire), a British Army Territorial Battalion from the town of Bolton, Lancashire.

Badge and battle honours of the 5th Battalion The Loyal Regiment. Soldiers, including new recruits not yet in uniform, parade outside barracks. Band of 5th Battalion plays. Soldiers, some very young, get rations of tea and rolls. Recruits undergo their musketry course at Entwistle Rifle Range, during summer. Firing machine-gun. Soldiers move across country in practical exercise; signallers wave flags; field telegraph is laid and tested; signalling by lamp. In camp at Holyhead, Anglesey. Soldiers do route march along country road, preceded by traffic-warning sign "Caution, Troops," then have foot inspection. INSPECTION OF THE 5TH BN. THE LOYAL REGIMENT BY LT. GENERAL ELLISON ON JULY THE 27TH 1929. Soldiers emerge from barracks, form up on field with factory chimneys in background and together with ex-servicemen in civilian clothes march past. Lieutenant-General Ellison then presents a medal to a sergeant. THE CENOTAPH SERVICE, NOV 11TH 1935. High-angle view down on Remembrance Day ceremony in Bolton, shows wreath-laying at the Cenotaph in Queen's Park, hymn singing and marchpast by soldiers along wet streets. THE CORONATION CEREMONY, LEVERHULME PARK, BOLTON, MAY 12TH 1937. Mayor inspects soldiers and ex-servicemen before ceremonial gun salute, raising of standards and three cheers. Marchpast by soldiers and ex-servicemen includes motor-towed artillery. THE OLD BARRACKS, FLETCHER STREET, 1936. View of vacated buildings. Ground action: soldiers rush forward with Lewis machine-gun. Guard mounting inspection. Return of the Old Guard: soldiers marching. Skirmishing exercise on moorland. Anti-aircraft action on the marsh: soldiers fix Lewis machine-gun on tripod in road and others lift rifles to fire. Machine-guns and infantry in action: cross-country exercise. The Enemy, represented by soldiers with white capbands. Discussion of day's events after the "battle". Soldiers receive cash on Pay Day. Scenes of camp life: cleaning Lewis machine-gun, resting, playing cards for penny stakes, polishing buttons, washing and shaving, boxing. Messing department: stoking field kitchen, preparing meat, cutting peeled potatoes, cleaning pans, rolling pastry, buckets carried to tents, soldiers eating inside tents.
