Film showing deck activity on board an Illustrious Class aircraft carrier.
Fragments of film joined by spacer. The aircraft shown include: (1) Swordfish. One aircraft is shown teetering on the edge of the deck, a second is completely wrecked after a collision abeam the island. Others are shown parked, being manhandled by deck crew, landing and taking off. (2) Albacores. Various aircraft parked, with wings folded and unfolding, chocks being removed, aircraft catapulted off etc (3) Seafires - some reasonably good film of landings. (4) Martlets. Fragmentary views.
The 'Blitz' – from the German term Blitzkrieg ('lightning war') – was the sustained campaign of aerial bombing attacks on British towns and cities carried out by the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) from September 1940 until May 1941.
