WELT IM FILM (SPECIAL REPORT) : Berlin bleibt Berlin [Main Title]
A WELT IM FILM report on Berlin's reaction to the Soviet announcement (itself a reaction to Western Zones' currency reform) of independent currency revaluation in the East Zone, including Berlin.
Film opens with radio and newspaper reports of the Soviet statement, and the Western Powers remonstration that Berlin is a 4-power city, not merely part of the East Zone (Communist and anti-Communist press coverage shown). The SED organises a demonstration at the Stadthaus; Berliners listen to RIAS broadcast description of ensuing disturbances, and Mayor Louise Schroeder's appeal to the demonstrators. Film of special statements by SPD representative Bach, CDU leader Landsberg and LDP leader Schwennicke; SED "rowdies" denounced, the Social Democrats announce a rally at Hertha sports stadium on June 24. Remainder of film shows the rally with lengthy excerpts from speeches by SPD leader Neumann and Ernst Reuter (elected Oberburgermeister but not recognised by the Russians) who attack the Communists, drawing lessons from recent events in Prague and parallels with 1933.
