BRITISH MOVIETONE NEWS ISSUE 832A (17 MAY 1945) [Main Title]
I. "Thanksgiving for Victory." Royal Family drives through City in carriage to attend Victory Thanksgiving service in St. Paul's Cathedral. Duchess of Kent, the Churchills and Queen Mary are seen arriving before the service.
II. "Rheims. Unconditional surrender signed." Ceremony held at Eisenhower's Battle HQ, attended by his chief of staff Lieutenant General Bedell Smith, Admiral Burrough and Major General Susloparov. German delegates are Admiral von Friedeburg, Jodl and his aide who sign with an "ersatz pen" while the victors use a gold one. Eisenhower addresses the camera claiming victory was the result of teamwork between all the Allies and all the Services.
III. "Berlin. Capitulation complete." Tedder and Zhukov inspect a Russian guard of honour shortly before the final act of unconditional surrender is signed in Berlin. Keitel, von Friedeburg and Stumpf are the German delegates. View of de Lattre de Tassigny outside after the ceremony. Ruins of Berlin including the Reichstag and Hotel Adlon, as well as the Brandenburg Gate which still stands.
