IV. Germans hand surrender terms to French at Compiègne. Hitler stands over map at General Headquarters, where he is directing operations with his generals (von Brauchitsch, Jodl, Keitel) and with Grossadmiral Raeder. Hitler walks with Goering, both half-screened by trees. Then Hitler stands waiting in a clearing with a General, Press Chief Otto Dietrich and Bormann before he bends forward to sign (autograph ?). Führer stands merrily entertaining his entourage, including uniformed but hatless Walter Hewel. At Compiègne German military ensign is unfurled over Alsace-Lorraine statue and guard of honour take up position in forest clearing. Hitler arrives with his commanders (Raeder, Goering, von Brauchitsch) and Keitel at clearing and reviews guard of honour. Party looks at Foch memorial and plaque inscribed "Here on 11 November 1918 succumbed the criminal pride of the German Empire, vanquished by the free peoples it tried to enslave". Party steps inside railway carriage where Foch had dictated terms to Germans in 1918. Inside coach von Ribbentrop and Hess sit on left, Hitler and Goering on right. OKW file marked Waffenstillstand (Armistice). French party of General Huntziger, Air Force General Bergeret, Vice-Admiral Le Luc and former ambassador to Poland Léon Noël arrive and walk past guard of honour. Party glance briefly at Foch memorial before stepping inside carriage. Germans rise and salute their victims, then Hitler steps out of carriage with Goering and departs past guard of honour to sound of German national anthem. Inside the carriage French salute in apparent isolation. Fighters pass overhead. Following reported government approval of terms Huntziger signs Armistice Agreement. With war on the European continent ended, on 25 June bells ring out everywhere over Germany and flags are flown in victory.
