Hewland's name was added to the list of artists in December 1939. In June 1942 she submitted a picture which was not purchased but the committee's response was encouraging and she obtained facilities. In August 1942 she submitted another picture, which was purchased for 20 guineas (IWM:ART LD 2371) (15); in October, a second was purchased for 12 guineas (LD 2479); in April 1943, a third, for 20 guineas (LD 2867) (32); IWM:ART LD 3032 for 15 guineas in June 1943, and IWM:ART LD 3286 for 20 guineas in September 1943 (50). In her letter at (43) she gives details of the airfields where 3032 and 3286 were painted.
Hewland sought permission to paint at the American Bomber Station at Bovingdon near Hemel Hempstead. The remainder of the file concerns this question, and travel expenses. The file includes a copy of the leaflet for the IWM's exhibition 'Some Women Artists' October 1958 - February 1959
