Luard offered himself as a war artist in 1939. Then in November 1941, one of his pictures, LD 1703, was purchased from the exhibition of Civil Defence artists, for eight guineas. Another picture, was purchased in the same way, for 8 guineas in January 1942.
In the same month, he was offered a commission for RAF drawings to the value of 25 guineas (21); and, in May 1942, drawings of pack-horses for 15 guineas (28). The results of these commissions were delivered in 1944 - LD 4226 and IWM:ART LD 4227-4231.
