Wheatley was commissioned to make two portraits of civil defence sitters, in august 1941, for 10 guineas each (5). The original subjects were changed but by January 1942 they had not been completed because of Wheatley's ill health. The subjects were dropped (and apparently given to Horton) and subjects local to Sheffield were to be found for Wheatley.
Two further works were purchased from Wheatley in March 1942, LD 1913 and IWM:ART LD 1914, for 20 guineas.
One of the original commissioned pictures, IWM:ART LD 2483 was delivered in October 1942, but the second, as well as a third picture of an aircraft worker commissioned in May 1945 for 10 guineas (44), were still not done by February 1946 and the commission was cancelled by mutual agreement.
