Cook, who served in the Merchant Navy as a wireless operator, was given a letter of recommendation from the Admiralty. He submitted some work done whilst on board ship, which was passed by the censor but not acquired.
In March 1943 further work was submitted and four works were purchased, IWM:ART LD 2816-7 and 2819, and LD 2818 (8), for 30 guineas.
Further works were submitted in December 1943 and four purchased, for twelve guineas (IWM:ART LD 3632-2, LD 3631, 3634) (17). The final acquisition was LD 4359, purchased for six guineas in August 1944.
