Bayes wrote to Dickey proposing himself as a war artist. He later suggested tank subjects, and then submitted (15) a scheme for "3 panels illustrating minor episodes of the North African campaign". The committee declined this suggestion, but commissioned a tank subject for 35 guineas (19) (IWM:ART LD 1157). To make this picture, Bayes went to Bovington Camp in Dorset. Details of the subject are at (32).
Bayes wanted further work, and submitted pictures and detailed proposals for pictures. The committee declined all until May 1942 when a picture was commissioned for 50 guineas - IWM:ART LD 2514 (43). The picture was delivered in November 1942 (53).
