Black wrote asking for facilities, having been in contact with Muirhead Bone, who also wrote supporting his case. Bone particularly emphasised Black's value as a Scottish artist.
One of Black's drawings, IWM:ART LD 727, was acquired in December 1940 for 2 guineas (9).
Black then wrote regarding his wish to transfer to camouflage work, which he achieved. Further pictures were submitted but declined, until IWM:ART LD 2866 was acquired, for two guineas, in April 1943 (30ff), and then from a selection of 20 drawings, LD 4648 and IWM:ART LD 4649-4650 were acquired in October 1944, for 12 guineas the three.
