Ethel Gabain was contacted in April 1940, at the same time as Evelyn Dunbar and Dorothy Coke. She was commissioned to do four lithographs of evacuation subjects, at 12 guineas each, and four WVS subjects. Gabain actually worked on more subjects, 13 in total, although only 8 were selected by the Committee. Lists are at (24) and (42). A fifth evacuation subject, of children about to be evacuated overseas, was mooted, but dropped because the evacuation was postponed.
There is also some correspondence regarding portrait lithographs, submitted to the MoI's studio, but not used.
At (43) Gabain discusses a request from the Press to photograph her working in the East End of London. A description of IWM:ART LD 236 is at (47).
