Exhibition of War Artists Work at the National Portrait Gallery
The first part of the file concerns a suggestion by H M Hake, Director of the NPG, that some of the war portraits might be included in an exhibition at the National Gallery, in 1942. In the event, the NPG trustees asked for works other than portraits as well, but the WAAC felt this would be inappropriate and confusing to the public to have a similar exhibition so close to its main shows at the National Gallery.
The remainder of the file largely concerns and exhibition, initially planned as a show of South African artists on active service, but which also included works by the New Zealand artist Peter McIntyre. The exhibition ran at the NPG from 04 May to 08 June 1943. The file includes lists of pictures, artists' biographies, lists of guests for the opening party and their invitation responses. The exhibition also toured to the provinces, although this is not covered in the present file.
The file concludes with correspondence about Philip Bawcombe's picture 'Cassino', the property of the South African Government.
