Exhibition at the National Gallery: Circulation to Provincial Galleries 32/1
The file falls into two parts, as follows:
/1/32/1 = 02 Jul 1940 - 28 Oct 1941
/1/32/2 = 01 Nov 1941 - 07 Feb 1945.
The file covers the organisation and administration of the programme for touring exhibitions of selections from the war artists' pictures. Requests were received for a tour after the opening of the first exhibition at the National Gallery in July 1940 and it was decided to circulate a selection to a number of large provincial towns, the itinerary being organised by the Museums Association.
The exhibition was in such demand that it was decided to circulate a second selection. Ultimately there were five selections over the period of the war.
The file also covers publicity matters and includes some presscuttings relating to the shows.
The first part includes a catalogue for a similar, smaller exhibition of war pictures which was circulated by the British Institute for Adult Education under the auspices of the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts, in 1940. The second part includes catalogues for the first and second series of the Museums Association exhibitions.
