Hayward wrote to the Ministry of Information expressing his interest in official war art work, whilst serving in the Anti-Aircraft branch of the Royal Garrison Artillery.
He reported for duty to the MoI on 4 July 1918 and was commissioned to make studies for a large painting of troops at Charing Cross Station. IWM:ART 1881-1884 were the products of this assignment. The file discusses studio arrangements and other administrative matters in relation to this commission.
Correspondence also discusses IWM:ART 1876 and IWM:ART2277, as well as a 1940 conservation note about a death watch beetle attach on IWM:ART 1882.
