Lieut Smith was recommended to the Chief Censor by Admiral Tothill. Commander Walcott wanted to use him in Mesopotamia, but Smith's commanding officer argued on Smith's behalf that it might be better to make use of Smith's knowledge and experience of the Grand Fleet. This was agreed to and eventually the Museum acquired IWM:ART 1245 and 1246. 'The Battle of Jutland' (IWM:ART1245) was included in the 'Sea Power' exhibition at the Grosvenor Galleries in 1919. Smith was subsequently commissioned to depict 'The Last of the Invincible' (IWM:ART 1247), and Smith submitted IWM:ART1248 in March 1919.
