18 pages of illustrations extracted from letters sent home to his wife and children by professional illustrator 2372002 Sergeant John Woods (1904-1990), while with 314th Field Security Section, Intelligence Corps, in Sicily and Italy in 1943 - 1944. His pen and ink sketches, together with explanatory notes, depict Italian people and scenes he witnessed, illustrating the everyday life of people in Sicily and his interactions with them, including comments on their temperament, clothing, food and pasta making, heating during cold weather, street vendors, priests, officials, children, and labourers, and the way conflict influenced life there. Together with: His Soldier's Service and Pay, and Book; Record of Service (April 1941 – December 1945); Military Identity Card (issued June 1943); three photographs of John Woods and one of a Corporal, and a Christmas 1943 airgraph with a self-portrait by Woods riding his motorbike (stuck on a page); five picture postcards showing Ragusa, Sicily (on the reverse of other pages); a programme 'John Woods, Illustrated Lecturer' from a lecture on 'Humour and Art' he gave 8 March 1939, includes a self-portrait sketch; a photocopy of an entry for Woods in 'The Lecture Agency Ltd. List of Lecturers, 1938-39' (2pp); and a ts transcription of his explanatory notes to the sketches (4pp).
