Letter, 7pp, ts, dated 7 January 1944, from 'Frank', to his mother, while serving with 156 Indian Petrol Depot, Royal Indian Army Service Corps, referring to the opium smoking of his Persian driver, extensively and evocatively describing the landscape and greenery in Persia, and also during a drive to Baghdad, the fascinating visual effects of desert mirages, describing social life among officers in Baghdad at the Tigris Palace Hotel and the officers' club at Nuffield House, describing the sights, sounds and smells of a shopping trip to Al Rashid Street, also the Baghdad bazaar, taking coffee with an Iraqi stallholder and describing his curious clothes in detail, describing the work of silversmiths in the bazaar, and referring to cultural works including the One Thousand and One Nights (including Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves), sending almond-stuffed dates home to family, and expressing regret at being unable to attend his mother's golden wedding anniversary.
