Object description
Ms letter to the wife of Private Frank Farmer, who had been killed whilst serving with the 23rd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment on the Somme on 15 September 1916 (during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, 15-22 September 1916), written by George Wakefield who described finding Farmer's body on the battlefield on 28 September and giving him a 'proper burial' beneath a wooden cross. Together with the personal items Wakefield found on Farmer's body and sent home to his family (which he mentions in the letter), comprised of a photograph of Farmer's son, a postcard and his metal identity tag, and the official War Office notifications of death. Farmer's body was never rediscovered and exhumed for official burial following Wakefield's actions, and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Somme, France).
