Copies of photographs, and documents from a Corporal and Acting Quartermaster in the Royal Engineers, including: a copy of a detailed ms transcription of a diary, with some additional explanatory notes (35pp) covering the period May - December 1947, with his transfer to 284th Royal Engineers Work Shop (REWS) from Julis, descriptions of the workshop and his colleagues, units they covered, the good conditions, Jewish and Arab staff, trips in to Gaza, staff leaving for demob, talks of the murder of Sergeants Martin and Paice, work as an armourer, packing up weapons, move to 1295 Stores and Workshop Section RE, Al Jirja, dismantling of camps and withdrawal of equipment, Jewish workers leaving, strikes, leaving the empty camps to be QMS for HQ 65 CRE, and his thoughts on changes and partition of Palestine; a sketch map of 284th REWS compound at Beit Jirja (October 1947); details of the Army staff and Arab and Jewish employees working at 284th REWS; a rough ms and ts translation of the placards hung around the necks of two sergeants, Martin and Paice, who had been hanged by Jewish group Irgun Zevai Leumi (July 1947); a copy of a ms introduction (3pp) to the closing down of the workshops (December 1947); copies of extracts from the Works Diary (November - December 1947) showing the works carried out, workers; copies of photographs of Bailey bridges, scenes of Beit Jirja and other areas in Palestine, Army buildings, and colleagues.
