Papers relating to the training of National Servicemen on No 5 Chinese Course, Joint Services School for Linguists, RAF Pucklechurch, and as Chinese linguists with 367 Signals Unit, 90 Group RAF in Hong Kong, 1958 – 1959 at RAF station Little Sai Wan, kept by Junior Technicians Peter Shortell and Paul Kennedy including: a file of examination papers, weekly and end of term (November 1957 – June 1958), some with annotations, stories in written in Gwoyeu Romatzyh (GR) (standard Chinese Romanization) transliteration of Mandarin; an Introduction to the Chinese language; Civil Service Commission preliminary Chinese (National Language) exam papers; a bound volume (90pp) containing stories written in GR, including 'Cloudy Bill', about a downed US Airmen, with translation exercises; first and second editions of the No 5 Course magazine 'Confucius Says' written in English and GR (1958); a photocopy of a booklet for new arrivals to RAF Pucklechurch with later correspondence from ex-servicemen who were discussing the accuracy of the booklet and enclosed map (April 1958); Far East Transport Wing Route Guide (28pp) produced by the RAF to give insights in to the Far East and the work of the transporters in the area for troops being taken out to the Far East; a map (2pp) showing areas out of bounds to all ranks in Hong Kong; three ms notebooks belonging to Peter Shortell (October 1957 – July 1958) containing vocabulary, practise Chinese characters and other rough notes; two lined notebooks for practising Chinese characters with Shortell's name (chop) stamped on the front; RAF Brief Statement of Service and Certificate of Discharge (RAF Form 1394) for P R Shortell (July 1959); his membership card for the Little Sai Wan Yacht Club, Hong Kong (1959); photocopies of photographs of members of No 5 Course.
