Transcriptions (30pp ts) of a series of personal accounts of aspects of his Second World War service in the Royal Navy as a ? Telegraphist, written up shortly after the events described and including: his experiences in the escort destroyer HMS AIREDALE when she was sunk by enemy air action on 15 June 1942 whilst participating in the Malta convoy MW11 ('Operation Vigorous') as part of 5th Destroyer Flotilla in the eastern Mediterranean, vividly recalling the circumstances of the ship's demise after being attacked by German Ju 87 dive-bombers and his own narrow escape from death before being rescued by HMS HURWORTH and returned to Alexandria; a period of recuperation at a "holiday camp" on Lake Timsah, Egypt, in July 1942; impressions of Palestine whilst based there in August 1942 on attachment with other RN personnel to elements of the Royal Hellenic Air Force (? 13th Light Bomber Squadron), and of the RN shore establishment HMS SPHINX in Egypt; a lengthy period of hospitalisation and recuperation (cause unspecified) at 32nd General Hospital at Nazareth and later in the convalescent camp at Nathanya, Palestine, 1942 – 1943, mainly describing outings into the surroundings (incl Sea of Galilee) but also his experience of the Nathanya camp; an account of his journey with a naval party from Tripoli (Libya) to Sfax (Tunisia) in March 1943 to set up a wireless station in the latter location, concluding with an account of the send-off given to the Naval Officer-in-Charge, Sfax, on his departure for Sicily in July 1943; with copies of two photographs of Jackman and fellow RN servicemen.
