Memoir (30pp ts) of his Royal Navy service before, during and after the Second World War, joining the heavy cruiser HMS CORNWALL at Wei-Hai-Wei (China Station) in 1934 as a Boy and experiencing her various cruises in the Far East before she returned to the UK in 1936, with brief vignettes of his subsequent service in the Home Fleet flagship HMS NELSON and the RN Signal School tender HMS SALTBURN (fitted with experimental radar) before joining the newly-built destroyer HMS AFRIDI in 1938, cruising the Mediterranean with a minor involvement in the Spanish Civil War and returning to home waters shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, staying with her during the naval operations in Norway in April 1940 and surviving the ship's sinking in the following month after she was attacked by German Stuka dive-bombers off Namsos, brief account of service in the destroyer HMS SOMALI followed by a more detailed record of his time aboard the minesweeper HMS HARRIER during her Arctic / North Russia convoy escort deployment in 1941 – 1942, the remainder of his wartime service being spent in the cruisers HMS ROYALIST and HMS CLEOPATRA interspersed with torpedo operator training courses, joining CLEOPATRA for her tour of duty in the Far East at the time of the Japanese surrender in August 1945, assisting with the reception of newly liberated prisoners of war in Singapore, concluding with postwar service in the frigate HMS LOCH QUOICH on Persian Gulf patrol duties before returning to the UK in 1947, completing his naval service in the fleet maintenance & repair ship HMS RESOURCE at Portsmouth until 1949.
