3 ms letters (6pp) written aged 17 to his girlfriend (later his wife) recording his service with the Royal Artillery as a gunner with the 137th Battery, 40th Field Regiment RA in the Falklands (August 1982), commenting briefly on his love for his girlfriend, being ordered not to say or show anything to reporters visiting his battery, the closure of the runway at Port Stanley resulting in delays to the mail, probing of the defences by the Argentine Air Force, his dislike of "this godforsaken piece of rock", his boredom asking that people at home write to him to cheer him up and keep him from going mad, the contrast between reality and the glamour of war as depicted on television and in the newspapers, clearing mines at Bluff Cove, being warned that Argentina will attack again, and being "very tired and just a little bit scared" although he would "rather die than show it". Also included is a £1 note (2pp, F54021) issued by the Government of the Falkland Islands on 1 January 1982.
