Letter (4pp ms) dated November 1939, written by East to a German friend, Hans Pommerencke, then living in Hamburg, expressing his incredulity that their countries should now be at war and explaining at length his opinions on the Nazi regime and on Adolf Hitler; three letters (6pp ts/ms) dated February, April and May 1947, written by Pommerencke to East and other family members in England, thanking them for letters and food parcels, and describing the privations and hardships being experienced in the immediate postwar period by the inhabitants of Hamburg and in Germany more generally, commenting also on the bleak outlook for youth in the country; three photographs taken (by Pommerencke ?) in Hamburg in 1933 during the Nazi election campaign, showing crowds listening to a broadcast speech and in a polling station, and Hitler and Goebbels with other Nazi functionaries on a public platform; collection of German souvenir postcards acquired by the Easts during a holiday in Germany in the late 1930s (mainly Hamburg, Bremen and Berlin); photocopies of several photographs showing East and Pommerencke during and after the First World War [East served as an army cook during the First World War and became acquainted with Pommerencke after the latter had been taken prisoner of war and sent to a POW camp in England; the two men and their families maintained a friendship from that time onwards].
