18 well written ms letters and air mail 'blueys' (59pp) written home to his parents in Bolton (30 April – 19 June 1982) by a Royal Marine serving with the Workshop Squadron, (later 2 Troop Defence Company) Commando Logistics Regiment (CLR) RM during the Falkland Islands conflict, with details of the journey to the Islands aboard HMS INTREPID, the conditions aboard, training, the thoughts and feelings of the men as they journeyed south (April 1982), descriptions of Ascension Island and hearing of the loss of HMS SHEFFIELD (May 1982), stopping in Falkland Sound and the feeling of uselessness when Argentine planes fly overhead, going ashore and digging trenches, descriptions of the Islands and of seeing Argentine planes shot down and British ships being hit, seeing a captured Argentine pilot, descriptions of Argentine prisoners (4 June 1982), boredom of being in the rear far from action, worries for his brother Geoff Russ who was in 'X' Company 45 Commando RM, writing from Ajax Bay, plans for leaving the Marines and starting a course in September, wondering why people sending literature to the troops had included women's magazines ('we just can't get the wool for the patterns'), hearing of the surrender of the Argentine forces, finding out that his brother was all right, moving to Port Stanley by helicopter, thoughts of the locals, seeing discarded equipment, the poor conditions the Argentines had left behind, his billet in Stanley, rest leave aboard the ST EDMUND, and meeting up with Geoff.
