Papers pertaining to his Second World War service as a 2nd Lieutenant with 79 Battery, 21st Light Anti-Aircraft (LAA) Regiment, Royal Artillery, in the Far East, comprising: 1942 Diary / Almanac containing diary notes recording his unit's arrival on Timor via Batavia in mid-February 1942 and its part in the short-lived defence of the island, going into Japanese captivity in the vicinity of ? Baboe and subsequent confinement as a prisoner of war (POW) in the camp at Osapa [Usapa] Besar until September 1942, then Changi (Singapore) until May 1943 when he was sent 'overland' to working camps on the Burma-Thailand Railway (with H Force ?) – Hintok Road (?), Hintok River and Krian Krai – returning to Singapore and Sime Road camp in November 1943, concluding his captivity in Changi goal from May 1944 to October 1945; 'small diary' (3 folios) on notebook pages, recording some of the key events for him during January 1942 – September 1943; partial transcription of / commentary on Samuelson's diary notes (3pp ts); small quantity of associated papers including two typed messages from his family whilst he was a prisoner (origin uncertain), a photograph of him in uniform, miscellaneous handwritten notes, hand-drawn map of the Burma-Thailand Railway, and documents regarding the award to him of the Military Cross in connection with his actions against Japanese troops on Timor in February 1942 [Samuelson's MC and other service medals held in IWM Exhibits collection].
