2 'Remark Books' containing a journal (43pp ms) for the period July 1914 – May 1915 whilst Shewell was serving in the cruiser HMS EURYALUS, recording his recall to the ship in late July 1914 and her preparation for war service with the Home Fleet, patrol duties in the southern North Sea as flagship, 7th Cruiser Squadron, in company with, amongst others, HMS HOGUE, ABOUKIR and CRESSY (sunk by enemy action on 22 September 1914, an event recorded briefly in the journal), troop transport convoy defence escort to Gibraltar and back in October 1914, returning to patrol duties off the Lizard (Western Channel) until February 1915 when EURYALUS proceeded to the eastern Mediterranean in preparation for deployment in the Dardanelles campaign, participating in the bombardment of Turkish forts and shore positions, and landing men of the Lancashire Fusiliers at 'W Beach', Cape Helles, on 25 April 1915, subsequently providing supporting fire for the army operations at Helles (the journal breaks off in early May).
