[BASIC ACCESSION RECORD] A collection of papers and photographs relating to his service as a Police Constable, and later as an Officer with the 14th Battalion Durham Light Infantry from August 1943, and attached to 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment from January 1944 to August 1945 in North Africa, Middle East, Sicily, Italy, Greece and Austria, including: detailed ms daily diary notes in six notebooks (December 1942 – August 1945) (88pp, 88pp, 94pp, 48pp, 48pp, and 32pp), from his embarkation (December 1942) to his return to the UK (August 1945); an album (c.95pp) containing 106 photos, with captions, of Tilbury, formal platoon shots of Officers and men in Egypt (1944) and Austria (1945), groups of soldiers on active service on the Gothic line, groups of officers and men, the National Day of Greek Independence (March 1945), and the Battalion in Wolfsberg, Austria, 13 German Propaganda leaflets, Allied Safe Conduct leaflets for surrendering German prisoners, two Allied propaganda newsletters 'Frontpost' (December 1943 and September 1944), handwritten orders and messages, lists of code words, letters relating to Tilbury's being mentioned in despatches, newspaper clippings, Special Messages from the commanders of Eighth Army (1944 – 1945), souvenirs from the Holy Land, and seven Italian propaganda postcards; an order form for military clothing with prices (June 1943); eight postcards of Barmouth, Gwynedd, Wales, with maps and annotations drawn on reverse; a spoof ms list of personnel and supplies needed for 200 "sinners"; an exercise book with a nominal roll of 'A' Company (Lincolnshire Regiment), with lists of NCOs and ORs; a school exercise book containing a poem probably written by MHT about life as a Police Constable during the Blitz, and with references to events in the war, written circa Christmas 1941; a ts account entitled "Neutral Territory" of a Bren gun carrier action in San Marino (September 1944); two letters to Tilbury written by two of his men from hospital (October 1944 and January 1945); his Officer's Advance Book (March 1945 onwards); a menu card for 6th Battalion Royal Lincolnshire Regiment "Djebel Impossible 10th Anniversary Dinner" (March 1953); two letters re oak leaf emblem for his mention in despatches (August 1947); and a programme 'Flying Colours' for Freedom of Grantham for 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (21 September 1946).
