A collection of papers relating to his deportation from the occupied Channel Islands, and his time as Camp Captain at Biberach Internment Camp, Germany, including: ms drafts of a report entitled 'A Brief History of the Guernsey Deportees to Germany, September 1942 - June 1945' compiled for the British Liberating Authorities in 1945 (together with a ts transcription), with details of the run up to the deportation, the journey, arriving first in Dorsten Camp, North West Germany, accommodation, before moving to Biberach, with more details about the conditions, the guards, the food, and also commenting on the arrival of Tripolitanian Jews from Bergen-Belsen, and liberation; further ms accounts about the YMCA and Red Cross; two stories of German agents infiltrating the camp under the names Homes and Watts, and Suthern before being discovered; a ts letter (8pp) written to the British Red Cross by Garland saying that conditions in the camp have been exaggerated and that they had been well treated and fed, with details of the camp organisation and social arrangements, and lists of committees and post holders (September 1944); a ts order (in German and English) from the Feldkommandant in Jersey telling Garland to prepare for movement (September 1942); three Christmas cards from the King and Queen, 1942 - 1944, including photographs; and a letter of thanks on behalf of Ernest Bevin thanking Garland for his carrying out the task of camp leader at Biberach (October 1945).
