Memoir (36pp ts) of his Royal Navy service during the Second World War, joining the RNVR as a Temporary Acting Sub-Lieutenant in October 1939, basic training in HMS KING ALFRED at Hove prior to joining the armed merchant cruiser HMS CALIFORNIA at Gourock the following month for Northern Patrol duties in the Arctic Circle, capturing the German merchant ship BORKUM in November 1939 amongst other episodes, transferring to the anti-submarine warfare trawler HMS NORTHERN REWARD in early 1940 patrolling North Sea coastal waters, the Faroe Islands and returning to the Northern Patrol later in the year (recording only one close encounter with a U-boat) until June 1941 when he joined the destroyer HMS VIDETTE on convoy escort duty based on Gibraltar, including some Malta convoys, transfer to the destroyer HMS LIGHTNING during her refit in September – October 1942 and subsequent convoy escort work in the Mediterranean before joining `Force Q' based at Bone (Algeria) in December, surviving the sinking of the ship by German E-boat torpedoes in March 1943, proceeding to the USA after a period of home leave to help in the transfer of the American-built Destroyer Escort frigates HMS CALDER and HMS CUBITT into Royal Navy service, accompanying both successively back across the Atlantic during the course of the year and serving in the latter until August 1944 after participating in the post-D-Day Normandy landing operations, brief posting to HMS DEFENDER (shore establishment at Liverpool) before attending the RN Staff College at Greenwich and concluding his naval career after the war with command of LST 363 during her return to the US Navy.
