[BASIC ACCESSION RECORD] Copy of diary re shot down as Bombardier in a B24J of 829th Bombardment Squadron (485th Bombardment Group,15th Air Force, USAAF) in bombing raid on Salonika, Greece, August 1944; notably bailing out, captured by the Germans and rescued by Chetniks in Yugoslavia, and repatriated to Italy via Bulgaria.
Violette Szabo (1921-1945) worked for 'F' Section in Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War. During a mission in France she was captured and imprisoned by the Nazi's. She was executed in Ravensbrück concentration camp and posthumously awarded the George Cross, the highest honour given to civilians.
