Ms journal (91pp, pp 25-26 missing) describing his volunteering, training and service with the 9th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment (73rd Brigade, 24th Division), covering his enlistment at the age of 15 (mid-September 1914) and training at Shoreham Camp, his embarkation to the Western Front and involvement n the Battle of Loos (September 1915) where he was lightly wounded by shellfire, after recovering in hospital he rejoined the Battalion in the St Eloi sector (December 1915), another tour in the front line at Sanctuary Wood (January 1916) which ended with the action at Hooge (14 February 1916) where the Germans exploded a mine, and his evacuation suffering from trench foot. The journal also contains a group photograph of an Indian Army unit; a page of Orders for the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry (in which Jones served from December 1916 – March 1922) for 5 July 1921; his Discharge and Character Certificates dated March 1922; and a canvas map sheet covering the Somme Valley from Rivery to Bray-sur-Somme (March 1918).
