11 ms letters (42pp) written mostly to his brother between 24 September 1914 and 14 January 1915 during service with the 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment (2nd Brigade, 1st Division) on the Western Front, describing his wounding in action during the Battle of the Aisne (17 September 1914) and treatment in No 10 General Hospital, St Nazaire, before evacuation to the 3rd Western General Hospital in Cardiff, including a report on the Battalion's reserve role at Mons then digging in before being order to withdraw, and a detailed estimate of Company and Battalion casualties suffered up until mid-September 1914, details of how he was almost captured at Wassigny during the retreat after a short engagement against German Uhlans, and a detailed description of the action in which he was wounded, discussing officer casualties at the First Battle of Ypres and rapid promotions for survivors, and predictions that the defeat of Germany will require huge numbers of men and guns. Together with a photograph and an Army Form B104 (7 October 1914) informing his mother he had been wounded.
