Ms training notebook (72pp) and ms letters (35pp), with ts transcript of the letters (10pp), written during his military service as an NCO with the 5th Royal Irish Lancers, training in Ireland and active service in East Africa, 1912 - 1918, describing his routine duties, training, his education and aim to achieve his third class certificate, commenting on how his horse was hit by a shell and reassuring his family that he was unharmed, his promotion to Lance Corporal and a letter from his commanding officer providing his family with information on his death in action (7 January 1918) at Luambala River, Portuguese East Africa and explaining where and how he was buried, including photocopied photos of him in uniform, where he was buried and the grave marker. The training notebook contains notes made at the School of Musketry at Dollymount (April – May 1917) and provides details of the course and instructors with notes on gunnery; together with a wallet that contained a modern photograph of his grave and papers (14pp) including a duty list, Third Class Certificate of Education, travel tickets/receipts, a list of duty men, a telegram and a medical pass.
