Ts memoir (23pp) covering his experience as a child in Kingswood, Surrey, 1938 – 1945, describing the building of an air raid shelter in his garden, collecting cigarette cards, his father's appointment as an ARP post warden, the issuing of gas masks, the announcement of the outbreak of war, the stocking up of school supplies in case of shortages, rationing, collecting newspapers for recycling as a Scout and attending school where he explains the changes that had been made due to war, air raid practice and his teacher leaving for France, the arrival of the Canadians and how they were billeted in the larger houses of the area, air raids, conditions in the shelters and the inconvenience of the night raids, preparations made for the expected German invasion, the reactions of those at home when receiving news from abroad, his holiday work helping with the summer harvest and delivering mail at Christmas, seeing Epsom Race Course filling up with troops, tanks and other vehicles in preparation for the D-Day landings (May - June 1944), the first encounter of the V-1 'doodlebugs' and how his brother was drafted to go and work in the coal mines as a Bevin Boy.
