Description
Object description
Privately printed edition (c.50pp ts) of letters written by him to his family during his service with the Royal Navy in the Second World War, principally concerning his training in HMS COLLINGWOOD (1941) and service in the destroyers HMS WHITSHED on North Sea convoy escort duty (1941) and HMS ROTHERHAM on escort duties in the Atlantic and in South African waters (1942 – 1943), attending an officers' course at Pietermaritzburg and Port Elizabeth (South Africa) before joining the submarine depot ship HMS ADAMANT with the Eastern Fleet in Ceylon (1944) [Tavner left the service in 1946 with the rank of Temporary Acting Lieutenant; his letters suggest that he was temperamentally unsuited to higher naval rank, having on several occasions to submit to disciplinary action for being too empathetic to the hardships suffered by the ratings].
