Two files containing transcribed, typed extracts from the captured personal diaries / journals of German Armed Forces personnel during the Second World War (in German, with English translations and an introductory essay), compiled by Major Hartley in May 1944 whilst serving as Chief Instructor at the War Office Intelligence Training Centre at Cambridge – the extracts were selected for the light they shed on the psychological and ideological `conditioning' of Nazi servicemen, and were taken from diaries covering the campaign in France (1940), North Africa (incl fall of Tobruk, 1942) and the Soviet Union; also one file containing a transcription of the official diary of the `Working Staff of the Reich Education Ministry' (Arbeitsstab des Reichserziehungsministeriums) during its evacuation to Bad Liebenstein (Thuringia) in March – May 1945, acquired during Hartley's posting to Germany with the Control Commission (Education Branch) during which he had particular responsibility for helping to set up the Ministerial Collecting Centre near Kassel and securing the surviving personnel and records of the Reich Education Ministry – with the file is a photocopied extract from a published memoir concerning the Bad Liebenstein group and referring to Hartley's work there; 5 wartime German Field Postcards.
