Coder/Leading Coder in the destroyer HMAS NAPIER (Captain, later Vice Admiral, S H T Arliss) during her deployment in the Indian Ocean as part of the escort force with the aircraft carrier HMS INDOMITABLE, from which aircraft were flown off to support the Allied forces in Java (January) and Ceylon (March), on anti-submarine operations as Japanese submarines became more active in the Indian Ocean, her service as the leader of the 7th Destroyer Flotilla, Eastern Fleet at the time of the Japanese Fleet's incursion into the Indian Ocean (April), the Flotilla's temporary deploymnet with the Mediterranean Fleet for Operation Vigorous, the aborted attempt to run a supply convoy from Alexandria to Malta (June), and then with the Eastern Fleet for the operations leading to the completion of the occupation of Madagascar (September) before proceeding to South Africa for a boiler clean, and also recording how he was drafted to the submarine depot ship HMS ADAMANT, based on Kilindini (November), and served briefly in the destroyer HMS HOTSPUR (December). The most detailed entries describe NAPIER's deployment with INDOMITABLE, his disappointment that they failed to intercept any Japanese warships in April, the Mediterranean convoy in June and the later Madagascar operations, but there are also several entries reflecting his dissatisfaction with living conditions in NAPIER and the monotony of prolonged periods of sea time.
