Photocopies of 29 ms and two ts letters and one ms postcard written by Montgomery between October 1958 and May 1970 to Major John North, author of NORTH-WEST EUROPE 1944-45: THE ACHIEVEMENT OF 21ST ARMY GROUP (HMSO, 1953) and GALLIPOLI THE FADING VISION (Faber & Faber, 1936), with historically important comments on British forces' withdrawal plans, Egypt 1942; Montgomery's masterplans for the Battle of El Alamein and the 1944 Normandy campaign and the significance of whether they were adhered to or not; Eisenhower's lack of understanding of the strategy of the Normandy campaign; the deployment of British airborne forces at Arnhem and a disagreement over strategy between Montgomery and Eisenhower which helped cause the Battle of the Bulge, together with interesting comments on aspects of Montgomery's activities after his retirement in 1958; the death of Sir Basil Liddell Hart in January 1970 and the strategy of the Gallipoli campaign. There is also one ts letter from North to Montgomery written in September 1960, and an ms appreciation (8pp) of the Field Marshal by North's widow, written in 1977.
