Object description
Ms notebook (107pp, some loose pages) containing a detailed, half-hourly, diary of the nights from 22 September 1940 to 9 October 1940 written by a barman, for his boss, while fire-watching from the roof of Downham Tavern in Greater London, containing details of the Blitz over the City, the Docks and surrounding areas, the bombs dropped, the resulting fires, how long the fires blazed for before being put out, the routes taken by the enemy aircraft to London, cloud cover and wind direction, strength and success of the barrage, whether the water was still working, a stationary light in Hither Green that flashed Morse code, and describing particular incidents such as hearing a "whistling bomb" on the night of 25 September, the bombing of the nearby railways and tramlines, and a big raid in early October 1940 in the Woolwich area. One of the loose diary pages is written on the back of a letter issued by Kwick Klean Laundry Service to its customers asking them, due to wartime shortages, to return the clean laundry (wrapping) paper so that it can be re-used.
