Ts transcript (7pp) of a very graphic letter dated 10 June 1944 to his family in Liverpool describing the final preparations for his service as a Forward Observer Bombardment attached to No 1 Combined Operations Bombardment Unit during the D-Day landings, his embarkation in an assault boat in the early morning of 6 June when he was 'lost in admiration' at the scale of Allied support for the Normandy landings, coming under heavy fire after landing on Sword Beach with the 1st Battalion South Lancashire Regiment (3rd Division) and difficulties in making contact with his Bombardment Liaison Officer in the destroyer HMS VIRAGO and his participation in the subsequent fighting until he was seriously wounded on 7 June and evacuated to England on the night of 8 - 9 June; together with his Army Book 439 recording his services as a Territorial Army officer in the Royal Artillery (1939 - 1944), his demobilisation notification (November 1945), a ts letter (1p), January 1946, from the War Office granting him the honorary rank of Captain, a ts letter (1p), November 1955, from the Army Medal Office concerning the award to him of the Territorial Efficiency Decoration, a photocopy (4pp) of his official record of service in the Army and two photographs of him in uniform (one with his wife).
