140 ms, and some ts copies, of letters (419pp) written to his parents and wife (November 1914 - November 1918) during service on the Western Front as an officer with the 8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (151st Brigade, 50th Division), November 1914 - December 1915; the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (151st Brigade, 50th Division), January - April 1916; the 8th Canadian Infantry Brigade, May - August 1916; the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers (86th Brigade, 29th Division), August 1916 - October 1917; and the 90th Infantry Brigade (30th Infantry Division), November 1917 - November 1918; covering his embarkation for France (April 1915) and action at Ypres (May 1915), Hooge (June 1915), Armentieres (August 1915), Ypres (June 1916), the Somme (March 1917), Arras (June 1917), Langemarck (August 1917), Grafenstafel Ridge (September 1917) and Messines (October 1918) with good details of trench conditions, his experiences of battle, the value of regular and professional troops, his nervous breakdown, the training of American troops, and news of the Armistice; together with an ms and ts copy of a daily diary (76pp) kept by him during his posting to the 8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (May 1915) and as Commanding Officer of the 90th Infantry Brigade (March - November 1918) covering the 8th Battalion DLI's taking of the trenches at Potijze (May 1915), action for the 90th Infantry Brigade at the Steenbeck-Pilkem Canal (April 1918), the training of the 70th American Infantry Brigade, the advance to the Messines-Wytschaete Ridge (August 1918), to the River Lys (September 1918) and the crossing of the River Escart (October 1918), with details of trench conditions, his experiences of command, troop movements and monthly casualties.
