Papers relating to: the Gallipoli campaign, comprising an annotated ts transcript of his diary (26pp) for 15 March – 25 April 1915 together with the original ms version for 29 March – 5 April (5pp) covering his command of 86th Infantry Brigade (29th Division) with a detailed description of the Brigade's outward journey to Alexandria on the troopship AUSONIA, training in Egypt, onward journey to Lemnos on the troopship ALAUNIA, his reconnaissance trips on the battleships HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH and HMS SWIFTSURE and an excellent account of the Brigade's landings at Cape Helles on 25 April and his experiences prior to and after being wounded and evacuated, also a notebook containing ms diary entries (13pp) for 7 November – 12 December 1915 covering his return to Gallipoli from England, landing at Suvla Bay (3 December) and details of conditions immediately prior to the evacuation while based at 160th Brigade HQ, his Brigade order for 24 April 1915, 47 messages dated 25 April 1915 and 1 dated 26 April 1915 sent to or received by 86th Brigade and a sketch map, a photocopied ms letter (10pp) from Captain M Farmar dated 22 May with an exceptionally detailed account of 86th Brigade's operations from 25 April – 9 May 1915 and 3 other original ms letters from Farmar, an interesting ms letter (6pp) from Sir Eric Girdwood concerning the Brigade's operations at Gallipoli during late June and July 1915, a photocopy of an ms letter (2pp with 2pp ts transcript) from the former stretcher bearer H Brown (1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers) recalling his aid to Hare on 25 April and a ts copy (61pp with 48pp ms draft) of Hare's 1936 lecture on the Gallipoli campaign; operations in Salonika, Egypt and Palestine comprising : diary notes (279pp) for December 1915 – November 1917 and diary notes (130pp) for November 1917 – January 1918 and March 1918 - July 1919, covering his command of 82nd Brigade and briefly also as Divisional Commander 27th Division on the Salonika Front, December 1915 – March 1916, with details of living conditions and references to German air raids, the Scottish Women's Hospital and Lieutenant General Sir William Marshall, and his command of 54th Division in the Canal Zone, April 1916 – February 1917, and in Palestine, February – November 1917, mentioning tours of inspection including visits to camps for Turkish prisoners and their families, and chronicling in detail operations during the First, Second and Third Battles of Gaza including losses sustained by the Division, his health issues and disagreement with the Corps Commander (Lieutenant General Sir Edward Bulfin), further operations in Palestine in December 1917, leave in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and England returning to further service in Palestine in March 1918 with mention of the Battle of Megiddo, his poor opinion of Lord Wavell (see 15 September 1918) and service with the Army of Occupation in Egypt, also an ms letter (6pp and 4pp ts transcript) from Hare dated 9 November 1917 describing the Third Battle of Gaza, an ms letter (8pp) from Lieutenant Colonel W C Garsia dated June 1920 describing a discussion about the battle with General Kress von Kressenstein and maps, divisional orders and a ts report (32pp) also referring to the battle (October – November 1917) together with a ts memorandum and annotated sketch maps concerning troop dispositions in the Suez Canal Zone (1916), a reprint of Hare's article on martial law (1924) and other papers.
