166 ms letters (and partial transcript, 174pp, with 6 photographs) written while he was serving in the light cruiser HMS GLOUCESTER (Mediterranean Fleet until December 1914, then 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron, Grand Fleet), in the battleship HMS MALAYA (5th Battle Squadron, Grand Fleet) from December 1915 – mid 1919 and as the Senior Naval Officer Upper River, commanding HMS WIDGEON on the China Station, 1926 – 1928, with details mainly of his off duty activities and family news but including a 'last letter home' (August 1914), and brief references to engaging the German light cruiser SMS BRESLAU (see August, September 1914), visits by HM King George V to the Grand Fleet (June 1916, June 1917), conditions generally afloat, the situation in the Chunking area of China, 1926 – 1928 including the Wanhsien incident (September 1926) when the Widgeon opened fire on Chinese forces and other similar incidents along the Yangtse river; also a photograph album containing 153 prints (and 2 loose photographs)apparently relating mainly to the China Station, 1926 – 1933, and including pictures of the cruiser HMS CORNWALL, as well as of HMS WIDGEON.
